How to spot a PF scam — before it costs you.

EPFO has publicly cautioned members about relying on unauthorized agents, and stresses that its own services are free. Fake "PF agents," phishing calls, and fraudulent websites target members every day — here's exactly how to tell the difference between real help and a scam.

Six PF scam patterns to recognize

These are the tactics that show up again and again. None of them describe how a legitimate consultant or EPFO itself actually operates.

🔑 "Share your OTP to verify your claim"

A call, SMS, or WhatsApp message asking for your Aadhaar or bank OTP "to process" your claim. EPFO never needs this from you directly. ✓ Hang up. Never share it.

🎣 Fake EPFO websites or apps

Lookalike portals or apps designed to capture your UAN login the moment you enter it. Only epfindia.gov.in and unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in are official. ✓ Bookmark the real URLs

💰 Large upfront "processing fee," no written scope

Payment demanded before any real work or written agreement, often with pressure to pay immediately. ✓ Insist on written scope + fee first

"I have contacts inside EPFO"

Anyone claiming special EPFO contacts or a guaranteed faster route is describing something that doesn't legitimately exist. ✓ No one can guarantee EPFO outcomes

"Your PF will lapse — act now"

Manufactured urgency designed to stop you from thinking it through or checking with a second source. ✓ Real EPFO processes don't work this way

👤 Fake "EPFO official" demanding a fee for faster processing

Anyone posing as an EPFO officer and asking for money to speed up your claim is committing fraud — EPFO's own services are free. ✓ Report immediately, don't pay

Protect yourself

Your PF-safety checklist

Six habits that make you very hard to scam, regardless of who contacts you.

01

Never share your UAN password or any OTP with anyone

Not EPFO, not an employer, not a consultant — no legitimate party ever needs it. You can share masked screenshots for review instead.

02

Only use official EPFO URLs

epfindia.gov.in and unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in are the only real EPFO portals. Bookmark them directly rather than clicking links from messages.

03

Get scope and fee in writing before paying anyone

A legitimate consultant tells you what they'll do, how, and for how much — before you pay, not after.

04

Be suspicious of guarantees and inside contacts

Nobody can guarantee an EPFO outcome or claim special access. This is the single most reliable red flag.

05

Slow down when you feel pressured

Urgency is a manipulation tactic, not a real EPFO deadline. A genuine issue will still be there in an hour after you've verified who you're talking to.

06

Report anything suspicious immediately

File a grievance via EPFiGMS and, if money or credentials were involved, report to India's cybercrime helpline (1930 or cybercrime.gov.in) right away.

🛡️

How NidhiSetu operates: I never ask for your UAN password, Aadhaar OTP, bank OTP, ATM PIN, or net-banking login — ever. Everything is done through official EPFO channels, with a written scope and fee shared before any paid work begins. I am an independent consultant, not an EPFO official, and I do not claim inside contacts or guaranteed outcomes.

Not sure if something you were told is legitimate?

Send me a masked screenshot of what you were asked for or told. I'll tell you honestly whether it looks legitimate — for free, whether or not you ever hire me.

Field notes / FAQ

Common questions about PF scams

Does EPFO ever call or message me asking for my OTP? +
No. EPFO does not call, SMS, or WhatsApp members asking for their UAN password, Aadhaar OTP, or bank OTP. Any message asking you to "share the OTP to verify your claim" is a scam, regardless of how official it looks.
Is it normal for a PF consultant to ask for my UAN password to "check" my account? +
No. A legitimate consultant can review your case from screenshots you share yourself (with sensitive details masked) — there is never a genuine reason for anyone to need your password or OTP directly.
What should I do if I already shared my OTP or password with someone? +
Change your UAN password immediately, check your claim status and bank account for unauthorized activity, and report the incident to EPFO via EPFiGMS and to India's national cybercrime helpline (1930 / cybercrime.gov.in) without delay.
How can I verify if a PF agent or website is legitimate? +
Check that official EPFO actions only ever happen through epfindia.gov.in or unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in. A legitimate paid consultant should give you a written scope and fee before any work, never ask for credentials, and never guarantee an outcome EPFO itself can't guarantee.
Are there genuine PF consultants, or should I avoid all of them? +
Genuine ones exist and can be useful for complex cases — the difference isn't whether they charge a fee, it's whether they ask for your credentials, guarantee outcomes, or pressure you to act immediately. Judge by behavior, not by price.
