EPFO Now Lets You De-link a Wrong Member ID Even After Contributions: What the April 2026 Change Means
EPFO has extended the portal's de-link facility to wrongly created Member IDs that received a small number of contributions. Here is who it helps, who it doesn't, and the one question to settle before you press De-link.
Can I now de-link a wrong Member ID that has PF contributions?
Often, yes. Since EPFO's April 2026 extension, a Member ID that was created wrongly can be de-linked from your UAN even if a few contributions were received, provided no claim or transfer is pending or settled against it and its joining date is on or after 31 December 2016. Employer and, in some cases, EPFO office approval is needed.
- What changed
- The Member Portal's de-link facility, earlier meant for wrongly linked Member IDs, now also covers wrongly created Member IDs that received a limited number of contributions.
- Effective from
- EPFO circular dated 13 April 2026.
- Who is affected
- Members whose UAN shows a Member ID from an employer they never joined, or a Member ID created by mistake.
- What you need to do
- Check the Member ID's contributions, claims and transfers in your service history before you file, and don't de-link a Member ID that holds money you are owed.

- Circular: de-linking of erroneously linked Member IDs from UAN (January 2025 facility)
What changed
In January 2025, EPFO gave members a way to de-link, from the Member Portal itself, a Member ID that had been linked to their UAN without their knowledge. That facility was aimed at Member IDs into which no contributions had been paid.
EPFO's circular dated 13 April 2026 extends the same facility to wrongly created Member IDs that have already received a small number of contributions. That matters because the most common version of this problem is exactly that: an employer you never joined, or a payroll error, created a Member ID under your UAN and deposited a month or two of PF before anyone noticed.
This update is for Member IDs that are not yours at all. If the job was real and only its dates are wrong, you need a date correction, not a de-link. See DOJ / DOE correction, or service overlap if two real jobs show the same months.
Who qualifies, and who doesn't
Based on the circular and the user manual attached to it, a Member ID can go through the de-link route when all of these are true:
- It was created or linked wrongly, not a job you actually did.
- Its date of joining is on or after 31 December 2016. A Member ID with an earlier joining date is blocked by the portal (it shows
ERR_UNE008). - No claim is pending or settled against it (
ERR_UNE009). - No transfer is pending or settled against it (
ERR_UNE010). - It has received six contributions or fewer.
How far the request travels depends on the contributions:
| Contributions in the wrong Member ID | Who reviews the request |
|---|---|
| None | De-linked after you confirm with Aadhaar OTP |
| One or two | The employer that created it approves or rejects it on the employer portal |
| Three to six, or the employer rejects it or doesn't act within about two weeks | The EPFO field office examines it |
| More than six | Not eligible for this route |
The question to settle before you press De-link
Look at whether the wrong Member ID holds money that belongs to you. If an employer you never worked for deposited PF in your name, that money usually isn't yours to keep. But if the "wrong" Member ID is really a payroll mistake by an employer you did work for, it may hold your own contributions.
The portal's declaration says you give up any claim to funds lying in that Member ID now or credited to it later, and its warning says that once the request is approved all available funds are forfeited. The circular adds that separate instructions will be issued later about transferring such de-linked balances to "SRF". So don't de-link a Member ID that may hold money you are owed. Fix it as a date or record correction instead.
Treat de-linking as final. The portal warns that a de-linked Member ID cannot be linked again.
What you can do yourself for free
Everything here is free and done on EPFO's own services. I never ask for your OTP, UAN password or bank login.
- Check the record. On the EPFO Member Portal, open View → Service History and note each Member ID's establishment, date of joining, date of exit, and whether contributions show in its passbook.
- Rule out claims and transfers. If you ever withdrew or transferred from that Member ID, it isn't eligible, and it probably isn't a wrong ID.
- File the request. Use the De-link option on the Member Portal and confirm with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile.
- Follow up with the employer. If it needs employer approval, tell the employer's HR or payroll team the request is waiting for them.
- Escalate if it stalls. If nothing moves after the employer and field-office stage, raise a grievance on EPFiGMS quoting the request.
What has not changed
- A genuine job with wrong dates is still corrected through a Joint Declaration with that employer, not by de-linking.
- Member IDs with claims or transfers against them still can't be de-linked through the portal.
- EPFO still decides every request. The circular widens who can ask; it doesn't guarantee approval.
When specialist help may be useful
- The portal shows
ERR_UNE008,ERR_UNE009orERR_UNE010and you're sure the Member ID isn't yours. - The employer that created the Member ID has closed or won't respond.
- You can't tell whether the entry is a wrong Member ID or a real job with wrong dates.
- A new employer's background verification is waiting on the record.

Need help deciding whether to de-link?
The hard part is rarely the button. It's being sure the Member ID really isn't yours, working out what happens to any money in it, and getting an employer who may have closed or stopped replying to approve the request.
I help members read their service history, decide between de-linking and a date correction, and follow the request through the employer and EPFO office when it stalls. If you're unsure which applies to you, send me the details.

Questions people ask
Can I de-link a Member ID if contributions were paid into it?
Since the April 2026 extension, a wrongly created Member ID with a limited number of contributions can be de-linked, subject to the conditions EPFO sets: no pending or settled claim or transfer, and a joining date on or after 31 December 2016. Member IDs with more than six contributions are outside this route.
Who approves a de-link request?
You start it on the Member Portal with Aadhaar OTP. Depending on the contribution history, the employer approves it, or it moves to the EPFO field office for review. A Member ID with no contributions needs the least review.
What if the employer that created the Member ID has closed or won't respond?
If the employer rejects the request or doesn't act on it within about two weeks, it moves to the EPFO field office. If that stalls, raise a grievance on EPFiGMS with the request details.
Can a de-linked Member ID be linked back later?
Treat de-linking as final. The portal warns that a de-linked Member ID cannot be linked again, and on approval the funds in it are forfeited, so be sure it isn't yours before you file.
Is de-linking the right fix for a job I really did but with wrong dates?
No. A real job with wrong dates needs a date correction through a Joint Declaration, not a de-link. De-linking a genuine job removes real service from your record.
