🧊 Login Blocked · Diagnose first

Can't log in and your UAN looks frozen? Here's how to tell what's actually wrong.

A genuine freeze — an EPFO Head Office security hold — behaves differently from a wrong password, an OTP that isn't arriving, or an Aadhaar-authentication failure. Read the exact error message first; it usually tells you which of these you're actually dealing with.

What to do next

How to diagnose a EPFO login failure

Follow this in order — skipping ahead usually costs more time, not less.

01

Read the exact error text first

'Account disabled/deactivated', 'invalid credentials', and 'OTP not received' are three different problems — each has a different fix.

02

If it says disabled or deactivated

This is very likely a genuine Head Office freeze — see the full de-freeze guide for the correct route.

03

If it says invalid credentials but the UAN is otherwise active

This is usually a password or registered-detail mismatch, not a freeze — try the password reset route first.

04

If OTP isn't arriving at all

Check whether your mobile number is still the one registered against your UAN — a changed number is the most common cause.

05

Use the matching fix once you know which one it is

Repeatedly retrying login doesn't resolve a freeze, and can lock other things further.

🛡

Do not do this:

  • Never submit a duplicate UAN or try to register a fresh one — one member can only legally hold one UAN.
  • Never share your UAN password, Aadhaar OTP, bank OTP, or net-banking login with anyone, including a consultant.
  • Don't use third-party 'UAN unlock' services — a genuine freeze can only be lifted by the regional office that holds your account.

Field notes / FAQ

Common questions on EPFO login failures

What's the difference between 'frozen' and 'locked'? +
A freeze is a Head Office security hold on the account itself; a lock or invalid-credentials error is usually a portal-level password or detail mismatch — the fix for each is completely different.
Will retrying my password multiple times unlock it? +
No — if it's a genuine freeze, repeated attempts won't change anything. If it's a password issue, use the official reset flow instead of guessing repeatedly.
Can I just create a new UAN instead of fixing this one? +
No — EPFO does not permit multiple UANs per member, and creating a duplicate creates a separate problem you'll need to fix later.
How do I know for sure if it's genuinely frozen? +
The clearest sign is an explicit 'disabled' or 'deactivated' message rather than a simple login error — send a screenshot and I'll confirm which one you're dealing with.
