❌ Rejection Reason · Very common · Fully fixable

PF claim rejected over bank account or IFSC mismatch? Fix it before you refile.

EPFO checks your bank details against your KYC record before releasing any payment. A wrong account number, an outdated IFSC after a bank merger, or an account not in your name is enough to trigger this rejection.

Why it happens

Why EPFO flags a bank or IFSC mismatch

Any of these is enough to trigger a hold or outright rejection on your claim:

🔢 Account number entered incorrectly

A single-digit typo when the account was first added to your UAN profile. ✓ Fixable via KYC update

🏦 IFSC outdated after a bank merger

Several Indian banks have merged branches in recent years, changing IFSC codes on existing accounts. ✓ Fixable — use current IFSC

👤 Account not in your name

EPFO requires the bank account to be in the member's own name — a family member's account will be rejected. ✓ Needs a new account in your name

💤 Account inactive or dormant

Accounts with no activity for a long period are sometimes frozen by the bank, which blocks the credit. ✓ Reactivate with your bank first

📄 Illegible passbook/cheque image

A blurry or cropped upload where account number or IFSC isn't clearly readable. ✓ Re-upload a clear scan

👥 Joint account, name order issue

Your name isn't the first holder listed, or doesn't match your KYC name exactly. ✓ Use a single-holder account

Resolution guide

How to fix a bank/IFSC rejection — step by step

The exact sequence for this specific rejection reason.

01

Get a current cancelled cheque or passbook scan

It must clearly show your name, account number, and the bank's current IFSC — not an old or partially visible one.

02

Verify the IFSC on your bank's website

If your branch has merged or been renamed, look up the current active IFSC before submitting — this is the most common cause of a repeat rejection.

03

Update via UAN portal → Manage → KYC → Bank

Enter the corrected account number and IFSC, then upload the supporting document.

04

Wait for employer KYC approval

Your current or last employer must digitally approve the updated bank KYC — usually within 2–3 working days.

05

Refile the claim once approved

Once your KYC shows "Approved," refile Form-31/19/10C. The claim should proceed against the corrected bank details.

Field notes / FAQ

Common questions on bank/IFSC rejections

Why does EPFO reject over IFSC when my bank account itself is correct? +
IFSC codes change when a bank merges with another or restructures its branches — this has happened repeatedly in India over the last decade. Your account is fine, but the IFSC on record is outdated.
Do I need a fresh cancelled cheque or can I upload an old one? +
Upload a current cancelled cheque or bank passbook first page — it must clearly show your name, account number, and the bank's current IFSC. An old cheque with a merged/inactive IFSC will trigger the same rejection again.
Does my employer need to approve a bank KYC update? +
Yes. Once you submit the corrected bank details on the UAN portal, your current (or last) employer must digitally approve the KYC update before it's reflected on your claim.
My account is a joint account — will that cause rejection? +
It can, if your name isn't the first name listed on the account or doesn't match your EPFO records exactly. A single-holder account in your own name, matching your KYC name, avoids this entirely.
