Not receiving your EPFO OTP? Your registered number has probably changed.

This is usually not a freeze at all โ€” it's your UAN still pointing to an old mobile number you no longer have access to. The fix is updating your registered mobile number through the correct verified route, not repeatedly requesting OTPs.

Gather these now โ€” you'll need them whichever route this ends up taking.

๐Ÿ“ฑ Your current active mobile number

The one you want registered against your UAN going forward.

๐Ÿชช Aadhaar-linked mobile number status

Check whether your Aadhaar itself has your current number linked โ€” this matters for verification.

๐Ÿ”ข UAN and PAN details

For identity verification during the update.

What to do next

The exact sequence for this problem

Follow this in order โ€” skipping ahead usually costs more time, not less.

01

Confirm the number registered against your UAN is genuinely outdated

Check via the UAN portal's 'forgot password'/OTP screen โ€” it will indicate where the OTP is being sent.

02

Update your mobile number via Aadhaar-based e-KYC if possible

If your Aadhaar has your current number linked, the UAN portal can often verify and update directly.

03

If Aadhaar isn't updated either, update Aadhaar first

Through UIDAI's official channels โ€” this is usually the fastest unlock since EPFO's KYC increasingly relies on Aadhaar verification.

04

If self-service doesn't work, contact the EPFO helpdesk

Call 14470 or raise a grievance on EPFiGMS explaining the number mismatch.

05

Once updated, retry login normally

OTPs should now arrive on your current number.

๐Ÿ›ก

Do not do this:

  • Never share your Aadhaar OTP, bank OTP, or net-banking login with anyone, including a consultant, while resolving this.
  • Don't create a new UAN to work around the login issue โ€” this is not permitted and creates a bigger problem.
  • Don't repeatedly request OTPs to the same unreachable number โ€” it won't arrive no matter how many times you try.

Field notes / FAQ

Common questions on OTP / mobile number issues

Is this the same as my UAN being frozen? +
No โ€” a freeze is a Head Office security hold; this is simply your registered contact number being outdated. The fixes are completely different.
Can I update my number without going through Aadhaar? +
Aadhaar-based verification is the fastest route since EPFO increasingly relies on it for KYC. Non-Aadhaar update routes exist but are typically slower.
What if I no longer have access to my Aadhaar-linked number either? +
Update your mobile number with UIDAI directly first (through official Aadhaar channels) โ€” this then flows through to enable the EPFO update.
How long does the whole process take? +
If your Aadhaar number is already current, the EPFO-side update can be near-instant. If Aadhaar itself needs updating first, allow more time for that step.
