Almost every PF claim rejection traces back to one of a small number of recurring causes. Here's the full pattern — and which specific guide to use once you know which one is yours.
EPFO's rejection remarks can look cryptic, but almost all of them fall into a handful of recognisable categories. Knowing which one is yours is the difference between refiling correctly the first time and going through several rounds of trial and error.
…you don't yet know your specific rejection reason code. This overview only helps once you've matched your remark to a category — if EPFO's rejection message is unclear or generic, start with our free rejection code handbook to decode it first, or use the diagnostic tool to narrow it down.
Employees: This applies to anyone with a rejected final-settlement, partial-withdrawal, or advance claim.
Employers: Several of these categories (employer approval, date of exit) depend entirely on employer-side action — see PF/EPFO Compliance if this is a recurring pattern across your workforce.
Pensioners (EPS members): A rejection tied to service-history gaps is a different, EPS-specific issue — see EPS Service History Wrong.
NRI members: The same rejection categories apply; bank-account and KYC mismatches are especially common where an NRE/NRO account isn't seeded correctly.
This overview covers the common, individually-fixable rejection categories. It does not cover disputes over eligibility itself (for example, service-period disputes affecting EPS pension), employer non-cooperation that has become adversarial, or cases where the underlying employment record has a genuine, unresolved factual error. Those need the specific guide for that situation, not a documentation fix.
Don't guess — the member portal shows the specific reason code or text for your claim.
Go to the specific guide, not a generic "how to fix a rejected claim" search.
A refiled claim with the same underlying gap will be rejected again — close the actual gap first.
If a claim has already been rejected more than once for reasons that don't match any of the categories above, or the rejection involves an employer who isn't cooperating, that's usually when a second, structured look at the documentation helps more than another refiling attempt.
A rejected claim does not permanently block your PF. Fix the specific cause and refile — repeated identical refilings only delay the process further.
