Name against UAN does not match with the NAME in Income Tax Department
Where it appears: The EPFO member portal, when you add or verify your PAN under Manage → KYC.
Some members see it after "PAN verification failed". The meaning is the same.
- What it means
- Your name in EPFO differs from your name in the Income Tax Department's PAN records.
- The fix
- Work out which record is wrong. Correct EPFO's name to match Aadhaar, or correct the PAN record, then add PAN again.
- Get help when
- Both records look right to you, or the EPFO correction keeps getting rejected.
I never ask for your OTP, UAN password or bank login.
What it means
When you add PAN, EPFO checks it with the Income Tax Department. The PAN exists, but the name on it doesn't match the name on your UAN, so EPFO won't verify it.
Why it happens
- Initials in one record and the full name in the other (for example "R. Kumar" and "Rajesh Kumar").
- A spelling difference, or the surname in a different position.
- Your name changed (after marriage, for example) in one record only.
What you can do yourself (free, on the EPFO portal)
Everything in this list is done on EPFO's own portal or with your employer, and none of it needs a paid agent. I never ask for your OTP, UAN password or bank login, and nobody else should either.
- Write down your name exactly as it appears on your PAN card and on Aadhaar.
- If EPFO's name is the odd one out, correct it on the member portal so it matches Aadhaar. My name-mismatch guide explains that route.
- If PAN is the odd one out, apply for a PAN correction through the Income Tax Department's PAN services, then wait for the corrected record.
- Add PAN again under Manage → KYC once both names agree.
When it needs help
- Your EPFO name correction has been rejected.
- The difference is more than spelling (a different surname, for example) and needs documents.
- You're about to withdraw and are worried about tax deduction.

Questions people ask about this message
Do I have to fix this before withdrawing PF?
PAN matters for tax on certain withdrawals, so it's worth fixing before you withdraw. My Form 15G guide explains when tax applies.
Which name is the "right" one?
Your correct legal name, normally as on Aadhaar. EPFO's record and PAN should both be brought in line with it.
