AADHAAR number, Name, DOB or Gender mismatch with registered data

AADHAAR number, Name, DOB or Gender mismatch with registered data

Where it appears: Reported during Aadhaar-based steps on the EPFO member portal, for example when resetting the UAN password or authenticating with Aadhaar.

Members usually see it right after the words "Aadhaar authentication failed".

The short answer
What it means
The Aadhaar number, name, date of birth or gender EPFO holds doesn't match what UIDAI holds.
The fix
Find which detail differs, then correct the wrong record: EPFO's (through the member portal or your employer) or Aadhaar's (through UIDAI).
Get help when
You can't log in to correct it, the employer won't approve, or both records look right to you.

What it means

When you authenticate with Aadhaar, EPFO sends the details in your UAN record to UIDAI to check. UIDAI answered that at least one of them doesn't match: the Aadhaar number itself, your name, your date of birth or your gender. Until the two records agree, Aadhaar-based steps will keep failing.

Why it happens

  • Your name is spelt differently, uses initials, or has the surname in a different order in one of the records.
  • Your date of birth differs, often by a day or a year, or one record holds only the year.
  • Gender was entered wrongly in one record.
  • Your Aadhaar was updated recently and EPFO still holds the old details.
  • A wrong Aadhaar number was seeded against your UAN.

What you can do yourself (free, on the EPFO portal)

Everything in this list is done on EPFO's own portal or with your employer, and none of it needs a paid agent. I never ask for your OTP, UAN password or bank login, and nobody else should either.

  1. Download your e-Aadhaar from UIDAI and write down your name, date of birth and gender exactly as printed.
  2. Compare them with EPFO's record (your HR can confirm, or check View → Profile if you can still log in).
  3. If EPFO's record is wrong and you can log in, use the member portal's basic-details correction. If you can't log in, ask your employer to raise the correction for you.
  4. If Aadhaar is wrong, update it with UIDAI first (UIDAI's FAQ explains the ways to update name, gender and date of birth), then retry after the update is live.
  5. If nothing moves, file a grievance on EPFiGMS. It is EPFO's own grievance portal and it costs nothing. Quote your UAN and the exact message, and keep the grievance number.

When it needs help

  • You can't log in at all and your employer has closed.
  • The correction is rejected more than once.
  • The date of birth differs by more than a small margin and EPFO wants documents.

Which guide covers it

The fix route for this message is in Aadhaar authentication failed on UAN login.

Who this page doesn't help

If authentication works but the OTP never arrives, see UAN OTP not received. If the portal says no Aadhaar is linked at all, see "Aadhaar is not available against UAN".

Questions people ask about this message

Which record should I correct, EPFO or Aadhaar?

Whichever is wrong. Your Aadhaar should show your correct details; EPFO's record should then be made to match it.

Can a single letter really cause this?

Yes. The check compares the details exactly, so a missing initial or a different spelling is enough to fail it.
