EPFO and ESIC deadline extensions: running log of due-date changes
When EPFO or ESIC extends a due date, it is usually a circular issued days before the deadline. This log records each extension I have verified, with the circular, so you can tell an extension from a rumour.
Has this month's EPFO or ESIC due date been extended?
Check the log below. As of 28 October 2026, the September 2026 ECR was extended to 31 October 2026 by EPFO's circular dated 13 October 2026. The October 2026 ECR has not been extended and is due 15 November 2026. ESIC contributions remain due by the 15th. Rumours without a circular are not extensions.
Current position
Live. This log is current as of the date at the top. The rule I apply: an extension exists only when I have the circular. A WhatsApp forward, a news line or a consultant's post is not an extension.
This log is only about dates moving. If you are already late and looking at damages or a notice, see VISHWAS 2026 for pre-June-2024 defaults, or PF notice reply.
The log
Newest first. "Original" is the date the return would normally be due; "Extended to" is the date in the circular.

Why the October 2026 ECR matters more than usual
October 2026 is the first full wage month under the ₹25,000 PF wage ceiling, and it has not been extended. If your payroll hasn't been reworked for the ceiling, the ECR you file by 15 November will be wrong on the newly covered employees and the contribution base. I've written that up separately: October 2026 ECR, due 15 November, no extension. The wage ceiling calculator shows the cost difference.
What you can do yourself for free
Checking an extension costs nothing and takes two minutes.
- Open EPFO's circulars page and filter by year. Read the circular, not the headline: which wage month, which return, which date.
- For ESIC, check the notices on esic.gov.in and the employer portal login page, where extensions are usually announced.
- Keep the circular PDF with that month's challan. If a damages notice arrives later, the circular is your answer.
- Set the original date in your calendar regardless. The compliance calendar has every recurring date with an add-to-calendar file.
What has not changed
- An extension covers the return it names. It doesn't change the next month's date, the ESIC date, professional tax or any state filing.
- Interest and damages for genuinely late months are unchanged: paragraph 23 of the EPF Scheme 2026 (0.25% to 1% of the arrears per month) and section 127 of the Code. A payment inside an extended date is on time for that return, so no damages arise on it.
- NidhiSetu is independent and not affiliated with EPFO or ESIC. Their circulars are public and free.
How I keep this page current
I check EPFO's and ESIC's circular pages around the 10th to 15th of each month, when extensions tend to appear, and whenever a client sends me a rumour. Each entry gets a "verified" date, and the changelog records every check.
What this means for you
If you are an employee
- An ECR extension means your employer's October or September PF deposit may legitimately show up later in your passbook. Wait for the extended date before raising a complaint.
- If the extended date has passed and the month is still missing, that is a deposit problem: see PF deducted but not deposited.
If you are an employer
- Pay to the extended date only when you have the circular. The damages clock runs from the original date if the extension turns out not to exist.
- An extension for the ECR doesn't extend ESIC, professional tax or labour-welfare-fund dates unless those bodies say so.
- October 2026 ECR: no extension. File by 15 November 2026, and use the compliance calendar for the rest.
Changelog
What I checked, and when. The newest entry is first.
- The Employees' Enrolment Campaign 2026 closed on 31 October 2026; no extension announced. No extension of the October 2026 ECR (due 15 November) either; the 13 October circular covered September only.
- Log started. September 2026 ECR extension recorded; October 2026 ECR confirmed not extended as of today. ESIC: no extension seen for October contributions.
- EPFO circular No. Compliance/AnnAcPlan/2022-23/RationalizationofECR-Part(1)/e-704368 dated 13 October 2026 extended the due date for the September 2026 ECR and contributions to 31 October 2026, because the wage ceiling changed on 17 September. One-time, September only.

Missed a date, or not sure which one applies?
Extensions arrive late and are easy to misread: they usually cover one wage month, one return, and nothing else. The costly mistake is treating a one-month extension as a change in the routine.
If you are not sure whether a date applies to you, or you have already missed one, send me the month and the return. I'll tell you where you stand and what to file first.

Questions people ask
Was the October 2026 ECR extended?
No. As of the date at the top of this page, no circular extends the October 2026 wage month. It is due on 15 November 2026.
Was the September 2026 ECR extended?
Yes, to 31 October 2026, by EPFO's circular dated 13 October 2026, issued under the second proviso to paragraph 28(3) of the 1952 Scheme because the wage ceiling changed mid-month on 17 September. It covers the September 2026 wage month only.
Does an ECR extension also extend the ESIC date?
No. ESIC has its own circulars. Unless ESIC issues one, its contribution date stays the 15th of the following month.
Do damages and interest stop during an extension?
The circular substitutes the due date for that return, so a payment made by 31 October is on time for September and damages do not arise on it. Damages for other months run at the EPF Scheme 2026 rate of 0.25% to 1% of the arrears per month, with interest under section 127 of the Code (section 7Q of the old Act).
How do I confirm an extension myself?
Open the circulars page on epfindia.gov.in or esic.gov.in, find the circular by date, and read which wage month and which return it covers. If it isn't there, it isn't an extension.
